I went back to work. I had been assigned to a new squadron. It had airlock entry, swipe cards, entry logs and vaults. There wasn’t a single window in the whole building. I would enter in the dark of the Perth winter, and I would exit in the night. My boss and Buzz had brought me across to this new squadron. It was a vote of confidence in me. I needed a very high clearance to work there, and it had taken many months of forms and interviews to secure it.

But I was struggling at work. Before my tour, I was able to focus on one task for hours on end, and could endure eighteen-hour days of heavy mental work. Now I would read a document and have to pause after only a page. Reading tired me. I would lose my ID pass, my car keys. I couldn’t decide what to do for dinner when I got home. It was easier for me to sit and stare out the window.

Michelle and I argued non-stop. She had no clue what I had been through overseas, and I gave up trying to explain it. We fought in the car driving home from a work function. ‘You hate me!’ she shouted. She was right. I hated her and every other person in this half-asleep town. I only cared about the men I had fought with, and my family.

After we arrived home, I walked across the road to the beach and listened to the waves crashing unseen. I put the small tiki she had given me in my mouth and shattered it with my teeth. She later saw the single shard of it on my neck, and when I explained what I had done, she just said to me: ‘Your spirit is broken.’ The next time we argued I threw her bag out of my apartment into the driveway, smashing all her cosmetics and perfume bottles. I told her to leave.
